Urine cfRNA liquid biopsy for bladder cancer

A new study in Nature Medicine describes urine random priming and affinity capture of cell-free RNA (cfRNA) fragments for enrichment analysis by sequencing (uRARE-seq), a liquid biopsy approach for urine cfRNA analysis, and evaluates its potential for non-invasive detection and molecular characterization of bladder cancer.
The authors used uRARE-seq to analyse urine cfRNA samples from patients with genitourinary cancers, including localized bladder cancer, prostate adenocarcinoma and renal cell carcinoma, and from healthy individuals. Distinct gene sets enriched in each tumour type were identified, and the remainder of the study focused on bladder cancer. In this setting, urine cfRNA profiles closely mirrored those of matched tissue samples, underscoring the ability of uRARE-seq to detect tumour-associated molecular alterations.
